Spring Clean Your Family’s Wellness Routine - Dana White, RD

Spring Cleaning

I’ve always loved the concept of spring cleaning. It’s a time to scrub away the grime of a long winter and gear up for the spring and summer months. When taken literally, spring cleaning might mean cleaning your house, garage or maybe your car, but I also practice spring cleaning for my family’s habits to help us all adjust to the change of pace and help promote their growth, development and overall health.

With the change of seasons comes a chance to be outside more, enjoy seasonal foods and maybe even plant a garden. So, toss open the windows and explore ways to spring clean your family’s routines while promoting nutrition, gut health, and protection from seasonal sensitivities.

Happy Tummy, Healthy Body

Gut health and immunity are closely connected. Your gut (basically, your stomach and intestines) is home to trillions of bacteria. These bacteria help digest food, but they also help your immune system to fight off germs, viruses, seasonal sensitivities and bad bacteria. If your gut isn’t healthy—because of too much junk food, not enough sleep, stress, or not eating enough fiber—the bad bacteria can take over, leading to poor immune function and more susceptibility to illness. Support gut health by making these habits part of your normal routine.

  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and yogurt
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Prioritize consistent sleep
  • Get in some intentional movement every day

Seasonal Changes

The change in seasons impacts health for families. Keep these tips in mind to help tackle the unavoidable hiccups that families face as the season change.

Changes in daylight

As the days get longer (or shorter) it can rock your kids’ sleep and meal schedules. Make efforts to stick to a solid routine, with only slight adjustments in meals and bedtimes as daylight hours change to keep the entire household on track.

Travel

Many families travel more in the spring and summer, which means more meals on the go.

Always pack healthy snacks (and hand sanitizer) for nibbles on the go. Bring along a small cooler for those snacks (and a few water bottles) to prevent leaving food sitting out in the heat.

Nutrient focus

Balanced and seasonal meals will always help fuel a busy family. Target these essential nutrients to help promote a vibrant immune system.

  • Protein from lean meat and poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans and lentils
  • Vitamin C from any and all fruits and veggies

Pre and Probiotics from bananas, whole grains, oats, honey, yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese and miso.
